The Woodvale community launched its own website last week. Held in conjunction with a fire awareness and bushfire preparedness session led by the local CFA, the event was attended by members of council and over forty residents.

Woodvale is a small rural community in central Victoria, 14km north of the City of Bendigo. According to website manager and Woodvale resident Gary Davis, the community comprises of mainly farming and rural lifestyle residents. There is no commercial centre or businesses and little opportunity to get together other than events promoted by the Woodvale Progress Association. Gary hopes the new website will help keep residents informed about local events and bring the community closer together.

In addition to promoting local events the new site includes much local information including news, facilities, town history and critical information during times of emergencies, particularly with the bushfire season fast approaching. The website features a Welcome Pack for newcomers to the community, developed by Mr. Davis after he moved to Woodvale eighteen months ago. “When my wife and I decided on a ‘tree change’ for our retirement, we were floundering in terms of local information, being used to living and working in the city. You have no idea some of the information you need - like how do you get a septic tank cleaned/checked, water tank servicing, pumps, what to do when there is no electricity (therefore no water) , what types of trees can you cut down for firewood & bushfire clearance etc. Rather that new residents having to struggle on their arrival like we did, and potentially make costly mistakes, I thought it would be a good idea to have a compendium of useful and emergency information for new residents.”

The welcome pack includes much information to help newcomers transition to living in the region such as bus times, where to find a local doctor or pharmacy, information on getting kids to and from school, rubbish collection and where to register your animal.
