New Oakey website gives community ownership, identity and pride

18/Aug/2010

After much hard work from volunteers of the Oakey Rotary Club, Oakey in the Darling Downs region of Queensland has just launched its own community website.

www.oakey.qld.au

The new website features maps of the area, local news and events, community and business directory listings as well as a comprehensive section about the local library.

According to website administrator David Totenhofer, “The Oakey Community Website is an important tool in retaining and strengthening the identity of Oakey, which, like many Queensland towns, used to be the main centre of a shire council. Amalgamation into a regional council resulted in the closing down of the shire council website, and Oakey losing its presence on the 'world wide web'. The Oakey Community Website has given the community ownership, identity and pride in its place in the world, and bought back localised directories, library information, heritage and news.”
