Newstead provides free wireless internet for visitors and residents

Over the weekend, the Newstead community had much to celebrate. Not only have they launched their own community website but are now providing a free wireless internet connection within their town for all visitors and community members. An enthusiastic crowd including Maldon & District Community Bank chair Ron Snep and Councillor Michael Redden of the Mt Alexander Shire Council gathered at a local café for the dual launch.

The Newstead community website development was funded by Maldon & District Community Bank to allow community groups, businesses and services to maintain their own content on the website. "Everyone in town can be a webmaster", says Dave Hall, of the Newstead 2021 project which lead both the wireless network and website development. Councillor Michael Redden commented that, "Both aspects involved in this launch are visionary. The internet access will be of real value to locals and visitors alike...We are setting new standards for the Shire in terms of connecting to the outside world. The Newstead website is a very exciting development. It will allow community groups to provide their own promotional materials and will connect us to other websites such as that of the Mt Alexander Shire. In a short time, it will become a trend-setting site and draw much attention to our town."

The new infrastructure will see free wireless internet available at several key locations within the town for residents and visitors who have their own computers. The new community website can be accessed on the wireless network so anyone visiting the town that would like additional information, can find out all they need to know about Newstead at the click of a button.
