Joe Hockey and Paul Kelly help launch the re-vamped Hunters Hill website
16/Nov/2009
The Hunters Hill community in NSW rolled out the red carpet on Tuesday night as well known local residents The Hon. Joe Hockey (Shadow Treasurer and federal Member for North Sydney), Paul Kelly and representatives of local business and community groups joined in the celebration of the re-vamped Discover Hunters Hill community website.
The evening started in the terrace of the Ottimo Italian Kitchen where over eighty local attendees shared stories about the picturesque Sydney suburb (and a glass of wine of two). Guests were moved inside where Editor-at-large of The Australian and local resident Paul Kelly addressed the community. Paul spoke passionately about living in the area as it provided a great refuge and retreat from the world of politics and work. He referred to the many battles won over the years, including the most recent attempted amalgamation with Ryde Council. “The fact that we have won these struggles is a real tribute to the community and demonstrates, if you don't have a strong community...you don't survive.”
The Discover Hunters Hill community website is a wonderful asset to the communities of Woolwich, Gladesville and Hunters Hill who all have Community Geographic Domain Names pointing to the one website. The site includes a comprehensive events calendar, local history, information on local facilities and resources as well as a detailed business and community directory.
Website Convener and Gladesville resident Brian Langford said, “Over the last six months the DHH website committee has worked closely with Ben Kay and his team from FuseFarm Interactive to add a lot more information and resources to the site.” At the launch event Brian demonstrated some of these improvements including an online payment system for membership and advertising and improved advertising facilities such as banner ads and tiles. Only local business and groups are allowed advertising privileges on the Hunters Hill community website. Brian added that, “The modest revenue gained from this facility helps defray our expenses and maintain the site.”
The increased community awareness and improvements to the Discover Hunters Hill community website have caused a major increase in website visits. Website committee member and sponsor of the DHH community website Philip Jenkyn made the comment that, “Before we started to upgrade the website online, the number of visits to the site averaged 3,171 per week. During September and October the flash banner and tile ads started appearing along with the other improvements. In October the stats for visits had jumped to 30,770, which is an average of 6,944 per week. These are very significant statistics as the number of dwelling houses in Hunters Hill is only 4,970.”
