Black Saturday community Glenburn growing strong online.

10/Dec/2009

Heading north east out of Melbourne, through Yarra Glen and Dixon's Creek is the rural community of Glenburn. This small hamlet is located within picturesque rolling hills and valleys only 80 km’s from Melbourne’s CBD.

Glenburn was one of the communities badly hit by the Black Saturday bushfires that swept through Victoria in February this year. After the fires, .au Community Domains made websites available for many of the bushfire affected communities. Each of these websites have been used to provide vital information to community members, links to authority websites, offers of donations, comments and questions submitted by community members, community events, rebuilding efforts and the list goes on. It wasn’t long after these websites were created that Doug McArthur of the Glenburn Progress Association volunteered to manage the Glenburn site on behalf of his community. After months of managing the site, The Glenburn Progress Association applied to take over the website completely.

On the website, Mr Mcarthur comments on the impact of the fires on his community, “We lost many houses and our historic Hotel.  Losses of stock, fencing and sheds were also extensive. Fortunately no lives were lost in our Community. The damage suffered was most significant but it could have been a lot worse if it had not been for the vigilance of our CFA, our local well prepared Fire Guard Groups with the assistance of private fire units and the help from the Sugarloaf Pipeline Staff and their resources.

“Our website provides an insight into the effects of the terrible fire, and events thereafter as we physically and mentally rebuild our Community.”
