Sydney Harbour Suburb Castlecrag now online
21/Jan/2010
The Castlecrag community now have their home online with the launch of their own CGDN website.
Castlecrag of Sydney's lower North Shore, stands on a beautiful peninsula jutting into the Middle Harbour. Much of Castlecrag's unusual layout, its preserved bushland and even aspects of its traditions and character are due to American architects Walter Burley Griffin and his wife Marion Mahony Griffin, who came to New South Wales in the early 20th century.
The Griffins philosophy of "designing for nature" is shown throughout Castlecrag including subordinating houses to the landscape, preserving access to and views of native bushland and waterways and being sensitive to natural features such as escarpments, creeks, rocky outcrops and established trees.
Castlecrag residents and businesses take great pride in their unique community and they wish to share their home with others online. According to Jill Newton of the Castlecrag Progress Association, “We have developed our community website to encourage visitors to take a walking tour of our suburb, peruse the shops or simply enjoy coffee or a most pleasant wining and dining experience at our open-air cafes and restaurants in our interesting boutique shopping village.
“A guide map of the special features of Castlecrag is available on our website, together with features on the history of our suburb and its natural environment, our community newsletter The Crag and details of the many groups in our community and their activities.”
