The small Bundanoon community in NSW has made headlines around the world today purporting to become Australia’s first bottled water free town, an initiative featured on www.bundanoon.nsw.au.

According to website manager Geoff Stewart of the Bundanoon Community Association (BCA), hits to their community website doubled yesterday with the majority visiting the news item about the bottled water issue. The total hits to the website this month have been over 4500.

When originally applying for the Bundanoon CGDN, the BCA stated one of their intentions in creating a community website as keeping the community informed about local news and any relevant information. Little did they know their community site would in fact keep the world informed with environmental websites from the USA providing links to www.bundanoon.nsw.au for information about ‘Bundy on Tap’.

The ‘Bundy on Tap’ proposal was organised by local business owner Huw Kingston in the face of plans by Norlex Holdings to extract water from the region at what Mr Kingston suggests is a, “Great profit to them but no economic or social benefit to Bundanoon.”

Mr Kingston adds that this initiative will offer, “Many positives for the town. Showing we care about our local environment and the global environment, reducing landfill contribution of plastic bottles, reducing littering of our town and very importantly it would add to the positive image of Bundanoon. An image of a friendly place to live or visit, a great place to walk or cycle, a tidy town with an active, concerned community.”
