South Australian opal town Andamooka launches first CGDN of the new year
06/Jan/2010
The Andamooka website is up and running only weeks after the Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association (APOMA) applied for the Community Geographic Domain Name.
The Andamooka community located approximately 600 km north of Adelaide in the outback of South Australia is best know as an opal mining town after its discovery in the 1920’s. One of the opals mined in Andamooka was set with diamonds into an 18 carat-palladium choker that was presented to Queen Elizabeth the II on her first official state visit to Australia. The necklace now forms part of the Queens personal crown jewels.
According to website editor Jacqueline Hancock, “Andamooka is an outback town that does not have a district council to manage the infrastructure and services the town requires. This means that the Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association in conjunction with Outback Areas Development Trust has a large task to not only keep the services going, but also in keeping the community informed with what is going on. It is our hope that the Andamooka website will help keep the communication channels flowing between the various businesses, community groups, residents and tourists whom all enjoy our unique town and way of life. “
