After extensive public consultations auDA, in 2004, decided to create new second level domains in .au for each state and territory (wa.au, vic.au, nt.au, etc). Names that can be registered in these 8 new second levels are limited to address localities in the relevant state/territory (subiaco.wa.au, carlton.vic.au, alicesprings.nt.au, etc).
.au Community Domains Pty Ltd, was a not-for-profit company acting as trustee of the .au Community Domains Trust (auCD) and was established by auDA in 2006 to facilitate the development of Community Geographic Domain Names (CGDNs) and was funded from the proceeds of the commercial geographic domain names ballot held by auDA in 2005.
The auCD company was wound up on 30th June, 2010 at the project funds end and auDA is continuing to support the initiative within their operations as part of their community engagement and education activities.
