auCD was pleased to invite members of the community, from Creswick and surrounding localities, to come and learn about developing a community website using Community Geographic Domain Names (CGDNs) on the 27th September, 2007 at the Creswick Learning Centre.
The event was a great success with many different areas of the community represented on the day, including businesses, community groups and two local councils. As well as learning about the CGDNs, how to apply for them and the support that auCD offers, the group were able to hear first-hand about developing a community portal from George Fong and Wayne Hines who were there representing the Ballarat community website group (www.ballarat.vic.au).
George talked about how, with significant support from the City of Ballarat council, local business and community members, the website has developed considerably since its conception, with really exciting things beginning to emerge from the project. Notably the group has motivated young members of the community to teach their elder peers how to update and manage content on the website in a free twice-weekly workshop. He explained how this not only harnesses an existing source of expertise but provides a fantastic way of approaching the problem of website maintenance as well as IT literacy in the community, all in one foul swoop!
Thanks to everyone that came! Particular thanks to Tony Redmond (Manager, Creswick Learning Centre), George Fong and Wayne Hines (Ballarat community website group).
